Magic word Benefits of using it When to avoid using it
Name
Creates an immediate connection with the interlocutor. It is a sign of appreciation and an attention grabber
When the person doesn’t give the explicit permission to use his/her name
Because
Provides a reason for the request you are making which in turn increases the chances to get a positive response
When you do not have a serious reason and giving it would act like a tell sign you did not think about the issue thoroughly. When in a position of authority (eg: parent), in the phrase: because I say so.
YOU
Increases your status (low status people talk about themselves more) and signals the fact that you care, when used with empathy
When you give negative feedback or in a conflict situation. Focus on the behaviour instead of the person.
Suggest
Increases the likelihood for skeptical people or decision makers to labsorb your communication thoroughly
When it is expected that you are talking from a position of authority or experteese. In that case you need to be more bold and firm, otherwise you might loose credibility.
Yet
Presupposes the other person is on the road to make a change, thus offering permission to grow and reinforcing a growth mindset
When you may interpret it as a permission to procrastinate a decission.
But
Focuses attention to what is said after the word while simultaneously reducing the importance of what was said before. It is also a great narrative tool because it increases the emotional tension in any narration.
When giving feedback, in order to avoid diminishing the importance of what was said before the word. In that case swap it with the word And.

Presupposes there is a cause and effect at play. When the effect is in your favor it creates the perception that once the cause is accepted as true the effect comes naturally as a true statement.
When the implied effect is not in your favour or is negative.

It is a statement of gratitude/appreciation and increases the level of trust and respect perceived by your interlocutor.

Increases the level of attention from your prospective clients. When used with the other meaning (free to choose) acknowledges the power of the other party and reduces resistance to persuasion.

Orients attention towards the future and possibilities. It also switches the mind from thinking about negative scenarios that are very similar to something bad that happened in the past. This creates a more optimistic regard in the relationship.
